About Betla National Park — The Wild Heart of Palamu
Betla National Park is one of the premier wildlife sanctuaries in eastern India and was among the first nine tiger reserves established in 1974 under Project Tiger. Spanning lush sal forests, bamboo thickets, and meandering streams, Betla is renowned for its herds of wild Asian elephants, leopards, sloth bears, Indian gaurs, sambar deer, and diverse bird species.
Deep within the dense forest canopy stand the imposing ruins of two 16th-century forts built by the Chero Dynasty kings (Raja Medini Ray). The twin Palamu Forts feature magnificent Islamic and Nagara architectural gateways, including the famous Nagpuria Gate, rising dramatically out of the wilderness.
